Merry Christmas (and how to keep it that way)
December 11, 2013
The Holiday season is upon us. Along with the joys and celebrations come the dangers and accidents that can befall us at this time of year. Here are some tips to help you keep your holiday joyful AND safe. The Tree: If getting a live tree get one that is fresh cut. Check to see that needles are firmly attached and don’t fall off when the tree is lightly shaken. Be sure the trunk is long enough so you can cut off two inches and place the fresh cut trunk in a sturdy stand that holds water. Water the tree every day! Keep the tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces and radiators. DO NOT put lighted candles on the tree or have candles near the tree. OH! And if you or children in your home have allergies or asthma use an artificial tree. A real tree can have up to 38 different asthma/allergy triggers on it. Be sure an artificial tree is labeled fire resistant and if pre-lit that it has a UL label on the lights. All strings of lights should have that tag on them. Turn off tree lights when you are going to be gone. Use only one extension cord. Get one long enough to get the job done with one. Don’t link up multiple cords. Use only 3 light strings per extension cord.
