Childhood Obesity: A "GROWING" Problem

A number of years ago it was felt that that when a child was “chunky” they would grow out of it as they grew taller. That is not true anymore. Childhood obesity has doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. According to the Center for Disease Control one third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese. This is a result of caloric imbalance: too many calories taken in and too few calories expended (physical activity). The old saying “calories in vs. calories out” still applies.

Back to School Checklist

Pencils check. Pens check. Paper check. Immunizations ….. Do we really need them? The answer is YES WE DO!!!! Immunizations can prevent serious diseases like the flu, measles, and chicken pox. It’s important to know which shots you need and when to get them. August is an ideal time to make sure everyone is up-to-date on vaccines before heading back to school.

I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM, WE ALL SCREAM FOR…..ICE CREAM!

July is National Ice Cream Month. It is time to enjoy that cool sweet treat. As a diabetic educator and someone aware that many are battling to lose weight or maintain their weight I can still say: “There is no reason why you can’t have ice cream in your meal plan!” However, you need to know your limits, portion size is critical when having ice cream on a healthy diet. A serving of ice cream is one half cup or one standard scoop. Frequency is also a factor; make it an occasional treat is the best plan. Have it, enjoy it, just not every day.
